Recyclability

Polyethylene-coated paper is difficult to recycle due to the mixed materials. The paper and plastic components need to be separated, which requires specialized recycling facilities, specifically hydro-pulping facilities. These facilities use water to break down the paper fibers and separate them from the plastic coating. However, hydro-pulping facilities are not common or widespread, meaning that while these items are technically recyclable, they often end up in landfills due to the lack of appropriate recycling infrastructure.

Eco-Friendliness

The polyethylene lining complicates recycling and reduces eco-friendliness compared to unlined paper. The limited availability of suitable recycling infrastructure further diminishes the environmental benefits, often leading to increased landfill waste.
